The bubble wrap analogy
Are we meant to inoculate our response?
In August of last year, I followed an invitation to incorporate a host of new routines and rhythms into my daily life that hadn’t been there in quite some time.
The result was delicious.
Then things happened and I noticed variations in my response to those things. One time it felt like a speed bump. Other times it felt piercing.
What role do spiritual practices play in our response to life when it happens? Are they meant to inoculate us?
This is a question I’m framing as “the bubble wrap analogy,” and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
A note about these videos: This Thursday Reflection video was originally recorded for the Light House community that I lead as part of the weekly rhythms we share. It is my joy to now share it here with you. Today’s video was originally recorded on October 8, 2025.

I love this thoughtful post. First thing that comes up for me is this song by the Indigo Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6sDR2bOuGE Also the word "resilience" arose. I know that we are all experiencing blow upon blow, every day something new. You are awake, noticing, feeling through it. I wonder if the practices are deepening that awakeness. Love!
